REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
for the Year Ended 31 December 2017 |
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with |
the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2017. The trustees have adopted the provisions of |
Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their |
accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) |
(effective 1 January 2015). |
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
Purposes and Aims |
AIMH (UK)’s purposes are as set out in the objects contained in the company’s Articles of Association: |
‘To advance education and research for the public benefit in the field of infant mental health and the emotional |
development of health of infants and young children, by; educating healthcare professionals, practitioners, policymakers |
and the general public, through strategic discussion, workshops, conferences and a website and publishing the useful |
results of such research’. |
AIMH (UK) is an interdisciplinary, not-for-profit organisation that promotes education, research and study of the |
effects of mental, emotional and social development during infancy. |
AIMH (UK) is an affiliate of the World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH). |
The organisation is underpinned by an acknowledgement of the impact of the early nurturing environment on the |
infant’s later capacity for emotional regulation and their rapidly developing brain, and thereby for the future wellbeing |
of society. |
The aims of the charity are to provide evidence-based educational resources, to academic, scientific, clinical and |
service-led communities. The charity seeks to support parents and carers of infants with up-to-date information to |
enable them to build on their skills and knowledge of infant mental health, thereby increasing wider understanding of |
the importance of infant mental health. |
The focus of our work |
The focus of our work has been to promote and establish new projects to continue to support and educate |
professionals and parents who study and/or care for infants/families. New projects include: |
The development of nine regional AIMH (UK) Infant Mental Health Hubs, throughout the UK, to enable practitioners to |
develop local communities of best practice to share news/events/information with each other. Scotland/North East & |
Cumbria/London & Home Counties regional IMH Hubs have been successfully launched with AIMH UK Scottish IMH |
Hub to hold it’s second networking event in November this year. At this point a further three Hubs, Wales/West |
Midlands and East Anglia are at planning stage. |
The development of a new website to include a dedicated online Parents Resource Page. Parents register free on the |
website and have direct access to a number of helpful organisations, recommended by AIMH (UK) advisors and an elite |
series of 23 videos informing parents of the different stages of ‘Getting to know your baby’. |
The development of an Infant Mental Health Competencies Framework and accompanying AIMH (UK) IMH |
Recognition Register to allow practitioners from across the multi-disciplinary team accreditation for their IMH skills and |
knowledge. |
The development and distribution of Bi-Annual AIMH (UK) Best Practice Guides written by the AIMH (UK) President, |
for AIMH UK Members. |
AIMH (UK) has broadened it’s representation on the Executive Committee both geographically and from across |
different professions and sectors to access the broader ‘voice’. |

HEALTH (U.K.) |
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
for the Year Ended 31 December 2017 |
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
How our activities deliver public benefit |
During the year AIMH (UK) has given open-access to a series of elite educational videos. ‘Getting to know your baby’ |
shows a set of 23 videos that is immensely popular with both parents, and professionals, who use the videos as an |
educational tool for the parents they engage with; a rapidly increasing group of ‘AIMH UK parent supporters’ is |
testament to the popularity of the videos. AIMH UK now has over 800 parents registered free on the website to enjoy |
these videos and other free parent resources. 270 AIMH UK members enjoy access to our Practitioners Resource pages |
to include a specialist online library, videos and unique purchase of ‘Early Relationships and Child Development’ DVD, |
an educational tool used to teach professionals to observe and interpret infant and child behaviour. |
This year AIMH UK (in partnership with Parent Infant Partnership (UK)) ran Infant Mental Health Awareness Week. |
Now in its second year this successful annual event has helped raise a greater understanding for parents, policy makers |
and professionals of the importance of infant mental health and, in the context of understanding further, why infant |
mental health should be looked upon as a preventative public health strategy for future generations. Social media |
coverage over the week was hugely successful with (for example) over 50,00 Twitter responses. |
The charity continues to run their national conference annually; open to the public the conference typically attracts |
between 100-160 attendees. Keynote speakers deliver their presentations free of charge. The Charity offers two |
awards at the Conference to recognise those who have highlighted and promoted the work of infant mental health to their |
best capacity. This year we are privileged as Mercers’ Hall in London has awarded us their venue free. |
FINANCIAL REVIEW |
Funding |
The cost of running AIMH (UK) currently exceeds the income available. The charity will be addressing the lack of |
funding for the forthcoming year by seeking income from research grants and fundraising activities in order to allow |
sustainable development of the charity in the forthcoming year and beyond. The financial climate for all charities has |
been challenging, AIMH (UK) is no exception to this and the prime objective of AIMH (UK)’s trustees is to raise |
awareness and funds. We are confident in our knowledge that AIMH (UK) has the credentials to impact on the nation |
the message that recognition of the importance of mental health in the early years has the potential to affect the whole |
life course of the individual. |
THE FUTURE |
The Trustees continue to work together to increase awareness and education in infant mental health. Our central aim is |
to promote the mental wellbeing and healthy development of infants, taking into account cultural, regional, and |
environmental variations, and to generate and disseminate scientific knowledge. Over the next 12 months we plan to do |
this by running annual national conferences, clinical workshops and continuing the launching of nine regional infant |
mental health Hubs across the UK. Parents will be at the forefront this year with our dedicated webpage page regularly |
updated by AIMH (UK) volunteer advisors. |
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT |
Governing document |
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a memorandum and articles of association dated 23 June 2017, and |
constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006. |
Organisational structure |
The company was registered as a charity on 17 August 2017. The Charity has 5 Directors and 2 Honorary Consultants |
who meet quarterly and who are responsible for the strategic direction and policy of the charity. An Executive |
Committee comprising of 19 members meet biannually to represent the voice of the parent and professional. |
Risk management |
The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate |
controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error. |
